Fall is a time of transition.
A transition between seasons, a transition in mood, a transition from lightness to dark. But fall is also often considered one of the most beautiful times of year. The reds, oranges and yellows of the trees, and perfect weather that isn’t too hot or too cold. It’s a fleeting season, but one to be enjoyed.
Transition can also bring uncertainty and discomfort. Fall tells us that winter is coming, but how soon? And how cold?
We often rush through many of the transitions in our own lives, however. We are always on to the next thing, so eager to get from point A to point B that we don’t take time to enjoy the journey, the in-between. And yet, sometimes, like fall, these transitions can hold beauty and joy if we take the time to appreciate them.
Take a deep breath at the stoplight on a beautiful morning as you transition from home to work. Eat slowly and enjoy your midday meal as you transition from morning to afternoon.
Even in our yoga practice, we are often rushing from one pose to another, without taking time to savor the transition between poses. Yet this is part of the beauty of the vinyasa style of yoga: the transitions from one pose to the next that gives us that feeling of flow. Some transitions in yoga can be challenging– our balance may be compromised, or we might feel awkward. Instead of embracing the experience and the emotions that come up we just jump right into the next pose.
So examine the transitions in your life and your yoga practice this week. Where can you slow down and savor the journey from one place to another, whether it’s a mental or physical transition? Savor that first cup of coffee as you start your day. Linger in savasana after class as you transition from your practice to the rest of your day.
Give in to the beauty of these small transitions in your life, just as you embrace all the beauty of a fleeting fall.
