Why healthy eating isn’t enough (aka take your vitamins!)
But in reality, we often need more. For starters, how many of us actually eat perfectly balanced meals 3 times a day? That’s what I thought.
But even if you do, sometimes healthy eating just isn’t enough.
Our environment, toxins, and even the food we are eating can all add stress to our bodies and create nutrient gaps that need to be filled. Learn more about why I recommend supplementing:
I believe in taking high-quality supplements that work together, not just a bunch of random individual vitamins.
I get all of my supplements from USANA because I know that they test combinations of products to make sure your getting optimal combinations of nutrients in safe amounts. Whichever brand you choose, get to know the company, their manufacturing practices, and their commitment to creating pure products.
Here’s the basic recommendation I give all of my clients:
Multivitamin
The foundation of a good supplement routine is always a high-quality multivitamin. A multivitamin helps prevent nutritional gaps, and will ensure you are getting the right nutrients in the right combinations. I personally take and recommend the USANA Cellsentials multivitamin.
Omega-3’s
Adding in a high-quality distilled fish oil is the next supplement I recommend to ensure you’re getting enough omega-3’s. (If you’re vegan there are other options like flax.) However, fish oil is one of the best sources of omega-3 and can make such a difference to heathy skin and hair. Be sure your fish oil is distilled and of the highest quality– some contain mercury or other harmful toxins. I personally take and recommend BiOmega from USANA.
Vitamin D
Unless you live in the tropics, most of us don’t get enough vitamin D from the sun. Especially in the winter, the angle of the sun actually makes it impossible for our bodies to make vitamin D from the sun’s rays. Even in the summer when we can, most of us spend our days inside and don’t get enough exposure to the sun. Vitamin D has been shown to play an important role in hormone production and regulation. I recommend it to all my clients in the winter months, and depending on your exposure, possibly all year round.
So that’s my baseline recommendation for all my clients: a multivitamin, omega-3, and vitamin D.
Do your reserach and buy from companies with high quality standards and good manufacturing practices. They might cost a little more, but you and your health are worth the investment.
